School is winding down!

I can not believe we only have 6 and a half more day of school! I am very proud of how hard the students have worked on all of the assesments the past three weeks! What awesome progress! Here are some pictures from our AWESOME Field Study at the St. Louis Zoo!

Last weeks Cool Tool Lesson was, I can be respectful by solving problems positively and not make them bigger.

One way we practiced being solving problems positively and not make them bigger is by using one strategy from the Problem solving wheel. The main strategy wer use as a school and class is stop walk and talk! A few other examples are, go to another activity, talk it out, or ignore it. Ask your student what is his or her strategy they use. We are continunig to do the color team with the most points earn lunch with me on Friday. The Purple Team has won two weeks in a row!! Teams can earn points by being safe, respectful learners, and working together.

This week in our Cool Tool lesson is a review week. We are reveiwing, I can be respectful by communicating with others in an appropriate way & Stop/Walk/Talk.

Math: We are working are working VERY hard on all of the end of the year assessments. We have completed ALL. The measurement, geometry, addition, subtraction, and less than greater. We are continuing to do ST Math and FASTT Math everyday. Our Math Coordinator, Ms. Spencer, is coming in this week to make Geometry Crowns with us! Check out the Benton website to do these great math programs at home too!

Writing: We are busy bees writing, writing away. We completed our end of the year assessment over Opinion Writing. After reading three Eric CArl books, The Hungry Caterpillar, Does a kangaroo have a mother too?, and The Very Busy Spider, the students choose one book. Students wrote why that Eric Carl book was their favorite and gave reasons why. Our classroom writing goal is leads or WOW beginnings. The students also have individaul writing goals; capiltilaztion, spaces between words, or puncutaiton. Ask your child what was his or hers.

Reading: Students have completed STAR reading, our computer based reading comprehension test AND the reading assessments. The progress as a class sky rocketed! Numerous students increased a whole grade level. We have 7 students on a second grade level. We also have two students who increased reading levels by TWO GRADE levels. WOW!!!

In Reading we are continuing to do our four Literacy Stations. One of the Literacy Stations include technology with building words on the ipad or MyOn. We learned readers do three things when they read. Readers read the pictures first, then read the words, and finally retell the story. We have practiced what readers do during small groups and indepedent reading time. We are continuing to practice our know excuse words.

Science: In our garden outside we planted basil, tomato, and radishes. We observe them daily and notice how much they are growing. We are continuing the Animal Unit. We are learning ways animals survive. One example is the polar bear. A polar bear needs fur to survive the cold. For our STEM Showcase, which is this Friday, May 30th at 8:15 am, we are taking animals a step farther and exploring what animals mimic. A polar bear mimics a fur coat becasue they both have fur and keep us warm just like the polar bears.
